A behavioral research study conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, reveals that people feel more compassionate toward others, have less worry and anxiety, and feel less depressed when fresh flowers are present in the home.

"Other research has proven that flowers make people happy when they receive them," Etcoff says. "What we didn't know is that spending a few days with flowers in the home can affect a wide variety of feelings."

Rebecca Cole is the author of "Flower Power" and co-host of Discovery Channel's "Surprise by Design." "The Harvard research is proof that if we live in places that lift our spirits, we can live happier, healthier lives," Cole says. "Fresh flowers are the perfect everyday accessory for any budget - they add color, fragrance and style - and now we know they even increase energy and compassion."

Study participants reported the greatest mood-boosting effects when fresh flowers were placed in common areas of the home such as the kitchen, dining room and family room. Cole's ideas for incorporating flowers into these areas include:

Place bud vases in high traffic home areas - with even just a few flowers. Any decorative glass from the kitchen will do!

The kitchen table might be the best place for flowers, because it's where people gather together. Stop by a florist where you'll find a wide selection of flowers from which to choose.

For an easy, elegant table decoration, set a series of crystal vases on a fabric runner. Place fresh flowers in each of the vases and surround them with greenery.

For more flower decorating tips, click here.

For the Home Ecology of Flowers Study, click here.

Flower Meanings

Orchid = Delicate Beauty

See more Flower Meanings.

Floral Designs

Fun-loving, free-spirited, playful feelings are conveyed by the whimsical floral palette, which is characterized by flowers in bold, contrasting colors.
Save the Florists Florists lose $500 million a year to drop shipping. Because of drop-shipping, independent florists are in danger of becoming extinct. Last
year alone, the floral industry lost over $500 million - yes, half a billion dollars - to
drop-shippers. That works out to 10 million customers a year, 435 customers in your shop
alone, lost forever. And the worst part? "You're supporting it."

visit savetheflorist.comWhat exactly is drop-shipping? Drop-shipping is the sneaky way some floral companies bypass traditional
independent florists like you. It works like this: a customer goes online, buys
what looks like a traditional arrangement, and a warehouse somewhere in the middle
of the country packs some flowers into a cardboard box and loads it onto a truck.

No artistry. No style. And - did you notice?-no florist. Who are these drop-shippers? Drop-shippers are the very same wireservice providers you're probably doing
business with right now. In fact, the CEO of one of these companies recently said,
"The direct-ship program... is roughly half our business." And not only are these
companies cutting local florists out of the picture, they're also encouraging the sale
of non-floral goods. When that happens, potential customers are gone from the
floral industry for good.

How to save the florist

What can you do? Say "no" to the drop-shippers and "yes" to the floral industry with three simple rules:

1. Don't give your membership money to companies that drop-ship.
2. Don't place orders through their networks.
3. Don't buy their products and services.

Instead, work with a company that supports your passions, that offers you the
tools to keep your shop healthy and profitable, that sends all of its orders to local
florists, and that doesn't try to put you out of business.

That company is Teleflora.
